Men’s Health Week - Building Healthy Environments for Men and Boys

Four Men Kicking a Soccer Ball

Men’s Health Week is celebrated annually across the world. Men’s Health Week recognises the unique health and wellbeing challenges of men and boys and provides the opportunity to put not just physical health, but also men's mental health and emotional wellbeing in focus. The week educates the public about what can be done to improve the state of men’s health while providing information on health services available to boys, men and their families. Its aim is to heighten awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease.

This year, our Community Hub Team in Roxby Downs celebrated the week in collaboration with Roxby Downs Doctors Surgery, Roxby Downs Area School and guest speaker Nathan Bolton of the Bolton Brothers. Through working together, we reached out to men and boys in the local community through:

  • Free Health Checks at the Roxby Downs Doctors Surgery which included checks for blood pressure, blood sugar, heart rate and body mass index. Participants were also able to chat with the doctor to discuss their results, obtain health advice and talk about potential lifestyle changes to improve their health and consequently quality of life.

  • A presentation on ‘Overcoming Adversary’ with Nathan Bolton from the Bolton Brothers at the Community Hub where Nathan presented on his experience as an ex-Special Forces soldier, his tours to Afghanistan and his subsequent battle with his mental health. Nathan shared his story on the freedom he found within vulnerability and his journey in seeking support for his mental wellbeing. Nathan’s talk was raw, real and really hit home for those that attended.

  • A Choc & Chat event with boys at the Roxby Downs Area School which created the space for male students to talk with their teachers about health and wellbeing each morning over a ‘hot chocolate’. The Community Hub was pleased to provide branded takeaway coffee cups for the school’s ‘Choc & Chat’ event.

The Community Hub’s support for Men’s Health Week was made possible thanks to BHP and the Community Hub Partnership. Roxby Community Hub - Building community connections and resilience — Healthy Environs
