Housing & Asthma

Housing issues can impact the health and quality of life of a person with asthma in many ways.

For example, mould and indoor air pollution are common asthma triggers, gas appliances are linked with childhood asthma and poor-quality housing can impact on mental health. Asthma Australia engaged Healthy Environs to better understand the specific issues, within the broad topic of housing, which impact people with asthma, including:

  • how they impact people with asthma (for example, causing asthma onset, triggering symptoms in those with asthma or limiting a person’s ability to manage their asthma); and

  • how these specific issues link across policy areas.

Healthy Environs research has included a literature scan, an Australian and international policy and program scan, as well as key stakeholder consultation (Australian and overseas experts). The report and the system mapping developed for this project aim to respond to the following questions:

  • What is the relationship between housing and asthma?

  • What are the key issues within that relationship?

  • Who are the key players in this area?

  • What are the existing policy actions and agendas?
